Here are some of the most common questions about getting Legally Wed. If you’ve got another question, feel free to get in touch!
1. What exactly is this service?
Legally Wed is a simple, personal, and affordable way to get legally married without the fuss of a big wedding. It’s a private, legal marriage ceremony where we complete the paperwork, say the legally required vows, and make it official—all in a relaxed setting like your home, a quiet park, or your favourite café.
This is not a traditional wedding ceremony with a crowd, a wedding party, or a celebrant standing at the front making speeches. Instead, it’s an alternative to a registry wedding that’s far more personal and meaningful. You still get the legal marriage, but as a straightforward, meaningful moment shared between you and your partner (with a few close friends or family, if you like).
It’s perfect for couples who want to skip the formality, enjoy a laugh, and mark the moment in a way that feels intimate and memorable—without the sterile atmosphere (and higher price tag) of the Registry office.
2. How much does it cost?
The total cost is $450, which includes:
✅ A registered celebrant to legally marry you
✅ Completion and submission of all required paperwork
✅ Your commemorative wedding certificate on the day
✅ Travel within 20 km of Brisbane CBD (further travel can be arranged – just ask!)
3. Where can we get married?
Anywhere private and comfortable! Many couples choose to get married at home, at a café, in a park, or even at the pub. The important thing is that it’s a simple and relaxed environment where we can sign the paperwork and say the required vows.
4. Can we invite friends or family?
Absolutely – as long as you keep it small! This is not a big wedding-style event, but a few close friends or family members are welcome to be there to share the moment.
5. What are the legal requirements to get married in Queensland?
To get legally married in Queensland, you need to:
📌 Complete a Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form at least one month before the wedding – We can complete the NOIM form together, or you can complete it and submit it to me
📌 Provide valid ID (passport or birth certificate + driver’s licence)
📌 Have two witnesses over the age of 18 present at the ceremony
📌 Say the legal vows (don’t worry – I’ll guide you through it!)
📌 Not already married or related to each other (seems obvious, but still worth mentioning!)
6. What identification documents are required?
To get legally married in Australia, you’ll need to show your celebrant proof of date and place of birth, and photo ID. You can use:
- An Australian or overseas passport (this covers both date/place of birth and photo ID), OR
- Your birth certificate (Australian or foreign) PLUS a current photo ID, like a driver’s licence or proof of age card.
If you’ve been previously married, you’ll also need to provide evidence that the marriage has ended (e.g. a divorce order or death certificate).
Don’t worry if this sounds like a lot—I’ll walk you through exactly what’s needed and help you get it sorted. Easy!
7. How long does the ceremony take?
The legal part of the ceremony is short and sweet—about 5 to 10 minutes. But since this isn’t a stuffy registry office, we’re not watching the clock. There might be a few laughs, maybe a couple of personal vows, or even time for a coffee and a chat. It’s casual, meaningful, and all about you two. So while it’s a quick process, it’s never rushed.
8. What to wear?
Whatever you like! There’s no dress code here—you can wear whatever makes you feel comfortable and happy. Whether it’s matching tracksuits or a three-piece suit, it’s totally up to you. This is your moment, your way.
9. What happens after the wedding?
On the day, you’ll receive your commemorative wedding certificate, and I’ll lodge all the paperwork with the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages. The official marriage certificate can be ordered about 2 weeks after the wedding directly from the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in the state you were married in.
10. Can we write our own vows?
Of course! There are some legal vows you need to say, but if you want to add a few personal words to make it special, go for it. Or, if you’d rather keep it short and sweet, that’s fine too!
11. What if we need to get married quickly?
The minimum notice period for marriage in Australia is one month from when the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form is lodged with a celebrant. However, in exceptional circumstances, you can apply for a shortening of time with the appropriate authority. If you think this applies to you, let’s chat!
12. Do you travel outside Brisbane?
Yes! Travel within 20 km of Brisbane CBD is included in the cost. If you need me to come further, just let me know – we can work something out.
13. How do we book?
Easy! Just get in touch via email, the contact form on this website, or phone to check availability. We’ll work together to complete the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form, or you can submit it to me. Once that’s done, we pick a date, and you’ll be Legally Wed!
14. How and when do we pay?
We ask for a $200 deposit when we’ve completed your Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM) form. Then, the final balance is due just 24 hours before your big day!
